Take-off for Chiba Jets and ratiopharm ulm
Japan's top club Chiba Jets and ratiopharm ulm are embarking on a transcontinental cooperation. The collaboration ranges from knowledge transfer and joint games to the development of commercial partnerships.
Basketball is not only booming in Europe – the sport is also experiencing rapid growth in Asia. At the forefront is Chiba Jets – Japanese champions in 2021, runners-up in 2018, 2019, and 2023, and East Asia Superleague champions in 2024. In the same year, the team moved into the new, state-of-the-art LaLa Arena TOKYO-BAY, an NBA-style arena with capacity for over 10,000 spectators.
Discussions between the two clubs had been ongoing for several months. Numerous areas emerged in which cooperation would prove extremely beneficial. These ranged from knowledge transfer and joint games to optimal player training with relevant international experience and the development of commercial partnerships. Managing Director and General Manager Yuta Ikeuchi has already visited OrangeCampus, and the managers of both clubs met again for talks on the sidelines of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The Ulm managers are due to travel to Tokyo in the near future. The clubs have also already exchanged ideas in the sporting arena, with a youth team from Funabashi traveling to Germany for an exchange and the Ulm youth team spending some impressive days in Japan.
Two continents, one idea
Both clubs share a similar philosophy: steady, healthy growth, a successful professional team with a focus on youth development, and continuous investment in the future. For ratiopharm ulm managing director Dr. Thomas Stoll, this partnership is also a joint investment in the future: "Together, we can achieve a lot. The Japanese league in particular has already implemented many excellent reforms. And the Chiba Jets have undergone impressive development in the last decade. During our initial discussions, my colleague Yuta Ikeuchi emphasized that they would like to learn from us. I am convinced that we will be the ones who can learn so much from the Chiba Jets." The general manager of the top Japanese club is also looking forward to the joint venture: “It is a great pleasure for us to announce today our partnership with ratiopharm ulm, a top club in the BBL with worldwide success in promoting young talent. ratiopharm ulm is not only one of the leading teams in Germany but has also produced numerous NBA players. Through the youth projects we started last year, we have gained valuable experience and held discussions about close cooperation at the professional level, which has now resulted in this official partnership."
Yuta Ikeuchi, Director and General Manager, Chiba Jets: "We would like to thank everyone who has always generously supported the Chiba Jets. It is with great pleasure that we announce today our partnership with ratiopharm ulm, a top club in the BBL with worldwide success in promoting young talent. ratiopharm ulm is not only one of the leading teams in Germany but has also produced numerous NBA players.
Through the youth projects launched last year, we have gained valuable experience and held discussions about close cooperation at the professional level, which have now culminated in this official partnership. This agreement will not only contribute to further sporting development but also create significant synergies in the business sector and for international expansion.
We want to create structures that enable young players to gain experience abroad and develop into internationally competitive athletes. This opens up new opportunities for our players, coaches, fans, and partners, which we are very much looking forward to. The Chiba Jets will continue to actively enter into international partnerships and promote a wide range of projects to further the global development of the club."
Dr. Thomas Stoll, Managing Director of ratiopharm ulm: "Together, we can achieve a lot. The Japanese league in particular has already implemented many excellent reforms. And the Chiba Jets have undergone impressive development. During the initial discussions, my colleague Yuta Ikeuchi repeatedly emphasized that they want to learn from us. However, I am firmly convinced that we will be the ones who can learn a great deal from the Chiba Jets. In addition, it is becoming increasingly important, especially in today's world, to look beyond our own borders and bring the world together through international cooperation. Sport is the perfect opportunity for this. We are of course looking forward to the trip to Tokyo – but even more so to the journey we will take together over the next few years."
