Open letter from Danny Jansson to all Ulmers:

It was exactly five years and eleven months ago, when I first arrived at Stuttgart airport. I was visiting a town called Ulm, for just a tentative visit to see if a basketball club named ratiopharm ulm was actually interested in signing an unknown youth coach from Finland. Someone to rebuild their youth organization.

Now, five years and eleven months later, I want to express sincere thanks to a few people.

In 2014, Artur Kolodziejski proved himself crazy. Crazy enough to actually hire some completely unknown coach that day. What a bold move, which actually turned out to be “not a bad one”, haha.

Over the past 6 years, I also had two crazy club motors in Thomas and Andi, who very soon realised that I’m actually pretty good at what I do, and they let me be “me” in all these years. I never felt like my work was second guessed, and that is a huge advantage in this business. Also, what I came to learn, no matter how surprising and stressful your days might get, it’s always better to have a boss that wants to do too much and dream big, rather than a boss who’s hesitant to try new things.

Over the years, I just loved being an Ulmer. Working with all these people in the club made every day a joy, and most of all, made Ulm feel like HOME. I don’t remember a day when our club office would not lift my spirits. Thank you Julia, not only for becoming a great friend, but also for making me look good since the first day, and thanks to all other club people who always took it in smile if I was hiding your winter coats, stealing your chocolate, or whatever I decided to do that day.

Also thanks to all coaches that I had the chance to work with directly and indirectly.

JD, Tim, Felix, Sebo, and Erik for really buying in what we were trying to do and serving our program for countless hours. Thorsten and Chris for being great peers when basketball was troubling, and finally Jaka and Ty for going together with the latest adventure, which was unfortunately cut short for now. Who knows, maybe in couple weeks we are back at it, haha.

Did I already say I loved being an Ulmer? Yes I did, haha. I have lived in several different countries, and to be honest, I was wished good luck to my move to Germany with Seppo Räty’s “Saksa on paska maa” quote. However, I will not call many places home, but Ulm I always will. What a great city with great people and support for the basketball club. So many friends that I’ve met in Ulm, also off the basketball court. Thank you Florian, Lucas and the whole OrangeAcademy fan group, who shut down opponent fans for years everywhere I traveled.

Naturally, the biggest thanks of all this go to the players. Each one of them, no matter if you played professionally last year or you focus on your studies nowadays. There are too many to name everyone individually, but just the fact that each day you have a bunch of people around you that bring passion and fun to every occasion, and let me coach you along the way - what else can I possibly ask for? You guys make the program, and damn did we look good together all these years.

Last, but not least, a couple of very special thank you’s to:

Nils Mittmann. What can I say? You “finished” a tremendous basketball career already in 2014, and then you decided to dedicate another 6 years of your time, body and health to this program and to raise these kids together with me. There’s simply not enough words to express my gratitude to you and your character in this process.

Sebo Sieghart. We came to Ulm together and wanted to change the world. Like two naive kids. We went through dozens of ups and downs, but jebote we did this together and I can’t ask for a better and more compassionate friend. And for any coach, imagine what an advantage it is to run a basketball program knowing that over the course of time your players will be guaranteed better athletes than what others have. Big high five to you.

Linda. For all these years, adjusting your plans to whatever mine are. Words are not enough, and hopefully one day I’ll be able to somehow pay that back.

As I will change clubs after the season, this is not a farewell to anyone in Ulm. Needless to say, this decision was definitely the hardest one to make, but once I witnessed, in person, the passion of Anton Gavel, it gives me peace to my mind to do this. And at the same time, after 6 seasons, I also think this is a great opportunity for the club to renew itself, and for me to rediscover myself as a coach.

As they say, “Einmal Ulmer, immer Ulmer”. I won’t be far. As a matter of fact, I’ll be just down the road and in the neighborhood. Taking care of our beloved little brother for the upcoming years. So let’s see what this Tübingen is all about.
